How To Lose Weight This Summer

Just because summer has arrived that doesn’t mean we need to abandon our health goals! Summer is one of my favorite seasons. Not only because my birthday is in summer, but because it is filled with fun, relaxation, and travel time. Some of us tend to go into vacation mode during summer, but that doesn’t mean we should use that time to forget about taking care of ourselves.

In fact summer is the perfect time to focus on our health and sliming down!

In the summer the farmers markets are bursting with brightly colored veggies and mouthwatering fruits making it easier for you to upgrade your diet. Much of summer’s bounty has extra nutritional benefits you may not be aware of. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants and other phytonutrients that may slow aging, protect against cancer and stroke, improve blood pressure, and keep your heart healthy. And just about everything available this season is low in calories so your waistline stays in check, another added health benefit if summer.

Most summer foods are lighter, cooler, packed with fluid and boosting minerals to take on the heat & humidity of the summer. Even with BBQ’s, pool parties and summer travel plans this is the season that your body wants to shed those extra pounds.

Here Are My Top Six Tips to Staying on Track During Summer and Help You Lose Weight

Eat Berries

Summer is when most berries are at their peak. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries satisfy your sweet tooth and are rich in nutritional bonuses, such as vitamin C. These summer superfoods are loaded with antioxidant phytonutrients that help neutralize free radicals, stabilize brain function and protect the neural tissue from oxidative stress. Throw them in smoothies, add them to salad, or just eat them plain as a delicious sweet snack.

Eat Raw Foods

During summer our body craves cooling foods. Take advantage of this by eating salad whenever you can. Mix up some of your favorite greens, toss with some cucumber, avocado, and nuts. Add in some berries and you have the perfect combination for a superfood salad.

Eat Cucumbers

Cucumbers are one of the best foods for your skin, joints, & energy levels. Not too mention they are also full of potassium, magnesium, & vitamin C, which give it a powerful alkalizing effect within the body.  The combination of alkalizing elements, electrolytes, & fluids make it one of the world’s best foods for enhancing energy levels. Give cucumber water a try this summer! Just cut up and add to your water for a cool and refreshing treat.

Drink Water

We all now how hot NY can be in the summer. Our bodies sweat more and we increase our risk of becoming dehydrated. Water helps us lose weight, reduce cravings, and help us feel fuller longer.  Think beyond water this season and look at all the fruits and veggies that help you hydrate. Watermelon, for example, is a great source of water and a sweet summer treat.

Be Preparred

Travel with snacks. Bring your own so you don’t get stuck eating junk. Don’t “save up” for a fancy big meal at night by not eating all day. In summer we tend to eat out more and drink more. Make sure you eat breakfast every day and that you eat in regular intervals.

Move Your Body

Since we tend to indulge more during the summer season make sure you are getting enough exercise throughout your week. Go to the pool– swimming is great. Go for a bike ride, take long walks outside, try a new summer activity and don’t be afraid to sweat.

As you can see summer the summer season is filled with easy ways to be healthy. Don’t use summer as an excuse to “take a break” from your healthy habits. Use this time of year to take care of yourself with some fun, relaxation and extra time to eat healthy.
