Top 10 Reasons To Exercise

My Top 10 Reasons to Exercise

Helps you loose weight

I know we have all heard this one before, but exercise really does help us loose weight.  Even if you don’t loose that many pounds you will more then likely go down a couple of sizes.  When we workout regularly with a balanced routine of cardio activity and strength building we build muscle mass. This helps us burn fat.  Since muscle weighs more then fat you may not see the results on the scale but you most certainly feel them.

Relieves Stress

Regular exercise helps lower the level of stress hormones in the body.  This is why we often feel a release of stress after a workout.  Exercise is a mind, body, & in some cases, spiritual activity.  Cultivating all 3 of these practices helps reduce the amount of stress and anxiety we have in our lives.

Boosts Your Mood

Not only does exercise help reduce stress, but it also improves your mood.  The “adrenal rush” one often gets when they workout is from the body’s release of endorphins.  Not too mention how good you feel from looking better in your body.

Keeps You Young

Workouts such as brisk walking or cycling boost your oxygen level.  Improving your aerobic capacity by about 15-25 percent can be the equivalent of shaving 10-20 years off your life.  Studies show that being active cuts the risk of premature death by about 50% for both men and women.

Reduces Infection

Even moderate workouts temporarily rev-up the immune system by increasing the capacity of immune cells.  If you catch a lot of colds try increasing how often you exercise.

Prevents Heart Attacks

Exercise has been shown to raise “good” HDL cholesterol and lower blood pressure.  New research is also proving that it helps reduce arterial inflammation.  This is another major risk factor in heart attacks and strokes.

Controls Blood Sugar

Exercise helps maintain a healthy blood-sugar level by increasing the cells’ sensitivity to insulin and controlling weight.  This is especially important for people who are overweight or at risk for Type 2 diabetes.

Protects Against Cancer

Exercise may reduce colon-cancer by speeding waste through the gut and lowering insulin levels.  It may also protect against breast and prostate cancer by regulating hormones.

It’s Fun

When you find exercise that you love to do it becomes fun.  If you can have fun and cultivate all of this for your body then it’s really a win-win.

Boosts your confidence (my favorite reason)

When you exercise your body feels tighter, more fit, and grounded.  This makes you feel good and increases your confidence level.  Not too mention all the compliments you will be getting about how good you look.

If all of those reasons aren’t enough just think of summer and and how good you will feel in a bathing suit.

Why I Love Exercise

Why I Love Exercise

I used to hate to workout, especially going to the gym.  Going to the gym in New York City can be quite a “scene”.  Waiting for machines, dressing up to work out, smiling and socializing with people that you know.  I always felt like people were watching me, judging my performance.  Most probably because I used to do the same thing to them.  My lack of confidence kept me away from the gym.  Even though I knew that it was necessary for me to loose weight and really good for me I just never found any exercise that I liked.

Now exercise (I prefer to call it movement) is a necessary part of my day.  I spin, yoga, workout out with a trainer, and even have a mini trampoline in my apartment.  I went from going to the gym once a week, to working out 5-6 times a week.  What exactly was it that made me make this drastic turn around?

Two years ago I began training with Christa Bache.  Quite simply she changed my life.  With Christa I began to strengthen my body.  Working out with her was so much fun that it didn’t seem like effort at all.  I looked forward to our sessions.  When I first started I was doing my cardio activity on the treadmill.  I really hated the treadmill.  It was boring and as much as I wanted to be a runner my body was not ready for that!

Then one day she took me to a spin class.  That was really the turning point for me.   Although I could barley get off the bike during my first class, I was hooked.  I loved the energy in the room.  Pedaling as fast as I could to the rhythm of the music. Dripping sweat off of my body.  I never had a workout like it before and all the while burning up to 800-1000 calories.

After that I realized that I didn’t hate exercise I just hated the kind I was doing.  I started to try other forms of movement until I found the ones that I liked.  Most important I found movement that my body liked.

I noticed significant changes.  My abs got tighter, my legs got stronger, and I found my inner core.  Of course the added bonus was loosing another 15 lbs, just by adding a daily routine into my life.  I was in the best shape of my life and as a result of that I gained a new sense of confidence.  This confidence poured out of me and crossed over into other areas of my life.

For me movement is a stress reliever and makes feel good about myself.  When I combine that with clean eating I feel that all is well.  I encourage you to find movement that you enjoy.  It might be walking in central park, or dancing in your living room, or maybe you will be daring and try something new.  That is what I did and it has made all the difference in my life.
